Former India player Aakash Chopra has said that if Suryakumar Yadav isn’t retained as India’s T20I captain, Shreyas Iyer should be brought back in the middle order and given the captaincy as well. While stating that Rajat Patidar should also be included as a middle-order batter, he added that Shreyas should be made the skipper.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, ‘Aakash Chopra,’ he said, “If he isn’t there, and you are looking towards someone else, my vote will be for Shreyas Iyer. Make him a part of the Indian team. Bring him in the middle order. Bring Rajat Patidar along with him as well, but I see the captaincy on Shreyas Iyer’s shoulders because he has got the experience.”

“He has performed incredibly in white-ball cricket. He is very, very good. He is the only player in the world to score more than 500 runs in a World Cup while batting at No. 4. So he is a performer. He is an absolute game-changer in white-ball cricket, and he captains very well. He has done that with three different franchises. The proof of the pudding is in the eating,” he shared again.

However, Aakash Chopra also said that Suryakumar Yadav should be retained as India’s T20I captain.

“Suryakumar Yadav will remain the captain for now because he just won the World Cup. You don’t change immediately after winning the World Cup, unless somebody retires, just like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja had retired, and you had to do something else,” he said again.

“However, that’s not the case with Suryakumar Yadav. Surya is not retiring. Surya hasn’t had a great World Cup, but he is the captain. He is a World Cup-winning captain. So you don’t change immediately. You will wait and watch, although it’s also true that he might not remain the captain or be part of the team until 2028, because it’s far and he is not getting younger by the day,” Aakash Chopra concluded.
