After Afghanistan missed a few DRS calls in the one-off Test against India, veteran cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra has said that the onus should be on the umpires to make the right decisions as well. He shared that the on-field umpire should have a tablet in his hands, or the third umpire should correct him as well. He said that after KL Rahul (100 off 165), Shubman Gill (126 off 177), and Rishabh Pant (81 off 121) faced these wrong umpiring decisions as well.

During a discussion on Star Sports, Chopra said, “It used to be UDRS – Umpire’s Decision Review System, and the umpire was removed from that because the umpires’ decisions were never challenged in cricket, but it was happening now. So we don’t want to put them on the spot. However, the first job is of the umpires.”

“As a batter or a bowler, and even as a captain, it is an added responsibility. I have not played cricket like this. I have not prepared for this in First-class cricket. I would say give a tablet in the umpire’s hands.
He can ask immediately, or the third umpire can intervene,” he added.

Meanwhile, Aakash Chopra also added that Afghanistan are virtually as inexperienced in using the DRS as India were when it was introduced on their tour to Sri Lanka as well.

“It’s a matter of habit when to take the DRS, and you are totally dependent on the wicketkeeper for that. In our first series with DRS, Anil Kumble was the captain and Dinesh Karthik was the wicketkeeper. It was a series against Sri Lanka in 2008, and DRS was used as an experiment,” he again said.

“We play a lot of Test cricket. The DRS was new, we didn’t have an understanding of that, and all our calls were wrong. We might have made an odd correct decision. I feel it’s exactly the same for Afghanistan. How many Test matches has Hashmatullah Shahidi played? You have played 13 Tests in eight years,” Aakash Chopra concluded.
