Former India player turned commentator Aakash Chopra has picked five former cricketers who could replace chief selector Ajit Agarkar if his tenure gets finished. Agarkar may have already attended his final selection meeting after the recent announcement of Team India’s squad for the white-ball series against West Indies and the Rest of India (ROI) squad for the Irani Cup 2026 as well.

Speaking in a video on his YouTube channel (Aakash Chopra), he said: “I mean, Zaheer could be a phenomenal candidate. I don’t know whether he will apply or not. I have no idea. You need someone who can take the team forward, someone who understands the blueprint. Zaheer Khan is absolutely gold dust. I’m thinking, could it be Irfan Pathan? I don’t know. I haven’t spoken to Irfan either, and I’m sure he is happy doing what he is doing. He does commentary really well. But Irfan Pathan, again, is a very strong candidate if you look only at cricketing credentials and the West Zone.”
“I was thinking, why not Wasim Jaffer? Wasim Jaffer, once again, has done immensely for this game. He has played really good cricket, including at the international level, and he is absolutely the don of domestic cricket. He also brings respect. He also brings a little bit of sanity. It feels like he would work in a very organised manner. He is a very sorted person,” he further added.

“Then I was thinking, could it be Sanjay Bangar? Sanjay has also done a lot of work with the BCCI. He has been the batting coach and has coached with different franchises. He is a good, good guy, and he is also someone who can contribute. He is also someone with very good thoughts and is a very composed person. He is a sorted individual and has a very analytical mind. He keeps thinking about what can be done, where, and in what way. So, he might not be a bad candidate either,” he shared.

However, Aakash Chopra also discussed if any of Parthiv Patel, Zaheer Khan, Irfan Pathan, Sanjay Bangar, or Wasim Jaffer could replace Ajit Agarkar if his tenure ends.
“If Ajit Agarkar is leaving, then someone will have to come in. And if someone comes from the West Zone, could it be one of these five? Parthiv Patel, Zaheer Khan, Irfan Pathan, Sanjay Bangar, Wasim Jaffer. Could there be anyone else from the West Zone?,” he concluded.
