Punjab Kings made a winning start to their IPL 2026 campaign, edging past Gujarat Titans by three wickets in a tense contest at Mullanpur. It wasn’t a perfect outing, but it was a result that underlined their ability to deliver under pressure and collect early momentum. Speaking on Star Sports’ ‘Cricket Live’, Aakash Chopra praised Punjab’s consistency in season openers, calling it their sixth straight win in the first game of an IPL campaign.

He highlighted the disciplined bowling effort and sharp captaincy, noting that the rotation of just five bowlers reflected clarity in planning. Chopra also pointed out that while Punjab could have finished the chase earlier, “it’s the two points that matter,” especially in a long tournament like the IPL.

He did, however, raise concerns about Gujarat’s batting approach. According to Aakash Chopra, the Titans are relying too heavily on their top order, while the middle-order structure still lacks clarity. He also questioned certain tactical calls, suggesting that bowling changes and overall execution under Shubman Gill could have been sharper.

A major positive for Punjab was the calm and composed knock from Cooper Connolly, who played a key role in guiding the chase. Former India all-rounder Sanjay Bangar analysed the youngster’s innings, noting how he capitalised on the early pace offered by Gujarat’s bowlers.

“Early on, it looked like he would run away with the game,” Sanjay Bangar observed, before adding that Connolly showed impressive maturity by adjusting his approach after wickets fell. Instead of continuing with blind aggression, he focused on taking the game deep and finishing it—a trait that stood out.

In the end, Punjab Kings walked away with confidence and crucial points, while Gujarat Titans were left with plenty to reassess heading into their next fixture.
