Openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson struggled in the first two T20Is against Bangladesh, scoring 16 and 15 runs, and 29 and 10 runs, respectively. With key players like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Ruturaj Gaikwad not playing, the series presented a golden opportunity for both Sharma and Samson to make their mark and strengthen their case for a permanent spot in the T20I team.

However, their underwhelming performances so far have raised concerns. Former cricketer Aakash Chopra addressed their struggles, highlighting the potential consequences of missed opportunities. In his match analysis, Chopra emphasized that such failures can be costly, as chances to impress the selectors may not come easily again.

He expressed doubts about whether either player will be considered for the upcoming series against South Africa after their disappointing outings in Bangladesh.

“Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson had the chance to shine but haven’t contributed significantly,” Aakash Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel. “With players like Yashasvi, Shubman, and Ruturaj possibly returning for the South Africa tour, and others like Ishan Kishan knocking on the door, competition will only get tougher. When you’re in that situation, you might regret wasting these opportunities.”

Chopra also touched on the challenging surface in New Delhi, which initially made batting difficult but improved after the powerplay. He advised the players to be patient at the crease, rather than trying to attack from the outset, as they have the skills to inflict damage once they are settled.

“Both Abhishek and Sanju need to give themselves a bit more time,” Aakash Chopra suggested. “They’re opening the innings and have the full 20 overs to make an impact. There’s no need to rush when you have the ability to build a big score.”
