When conversations around T20 greatness begin, names like Chris Gayle and Rashid Khan dominate the debate. Gayle remains the highest run-scorer in the format, while Rashid holds the record for most wickets in T20 cricket. Yet, in a surprising and thought-provoking take, AB de Villiers has picked a different name as the greatest of all time in T20s.

Jasprit Bumrah

The former South African captain has backed Jasprit Bumrah as his T20 GOAT—an answer he himself described as “ironic.” Speaking in a recent interaction, AB de Villiers said, “It’s going to be a controversial… not controversial, ironic answer, because I think it’s Bumrah. But not bowling to me.”

He went on to explain his reasoning, highlighting Bumrah’s unmatched consistency and ability to deliver in high-pressure moments. “His ability to bowl at any stage of the 20 overs and take wickets under pressure—with the new ball, old ball, you name it. Super over—you throw the ball to him; he wins you the game,” De Villiers added.

Bumrah’s numbers back up that claim. Since his T20 debut in 2013, the Indian pace spearhead has featured in over 270 matches, picking up 345 wickets across formats. In T20 internationals alone, he is among India’s leading wicket-takers, while in the IPL, he stands as the highest wicket-taker for Mumbai Indians with 183 scalps.

Beyond statistics, it’s Bumrah’s impact in crucial matches that elevates his status. He played a defining role in India’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2024, where he was named Player of the Tournament. In the 2026 edition as well, he finished among the top wicket-takers, underlining his consistency on the global stage.

One of his standout performances came in the final against New Zealand in Ahmedabad, where he delivered a match-winning spell of 4 for 15. That effort helped India seal a dominant victory, showcasing his ability to rise when it matters most.

As IPL 2026 approaches, Bumrah now stands on the brink of another milestone. Representing Mumbai Indians, he could soon become the first fast bowler to claim 200 wickets for a single franchise—yet another chapter in an already extraordinary T20 legacy.
