The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to kick off on March 22, bringing back the excitement of a two-month-long cricketing extravaganza. With ten franchises gearing up for a shot at the coveted title, former South African captain and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) icon AB de Villiers has shared his predictions for the four teams likely to reach the playoffs this season.

In a recent discussion on his YouTube channel, AB de Villiers named Mumbai Indians (MI), RCB, Gujarat Titans (GT), and defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as his playoff picks. He emphasized the balance and firepower of these teams, believing they possess the depth to leave a lasting mark this season.

“I think Mumbai Indians can reach the playoffs. I definitely think RCB will also reach the playoffs this time because the team is in balance. Then, Gujarat Titans is also a strong contender. I believe defending champions KKR will also be in the playoff race and can secure a spot. These are my four teams that can reach the playoffs,” AB de Villiers expressed confidently.

However, his predictions stirred conversations, particularly his decision to exclude Chennai Super Kings (CSK) — a franchise synonymous with consistency and success, having won the IPL five times. CSK narrowly missed the playoffs last season under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad, losing a critical match to RCB.

While acknowledging CSK’s strength, AB de Villiers maintained that his selected teams had the best shot this year. “Yes, I have not kept CSK. It is a strong team, and CSK fans may be disappointed, but I will stick with these four teams only,” he added.

The season opener will see KKR locking horns with RCB at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Notably, Hardik Pandya will miss MI’s first game due to a slow over-rate penalty, with Suryakumar Yadav stepping in as captain. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill continues to lead GT, Ajinkya Rahane takes charge of KKR, and RCB will be led by Rajat Patidar as they seek their maiden IPL title. With predictions, speculations, and excitement at their peak, IPL 2025 promises to be a thrilling spectacle.
