Former South Africa great AB de Villiers has stirred fresh debate around MS Dhoni’s role at Chennai Super Kings, especially with IPL 2026 around the corner. According to de Villiers, Dhoni batting as low as No. 8 or 9 significantly limits his impact on the game. Dhoni, who has been a pillar of the IPL since its inception in 2008, played a key role in building CSK into a powerhouse franchise. His leadership and finishing skills defined many iconic wins.

However, at 44, his role has gradually reduced. He stepped down as captain ahead of the 2024 season, passing the reins to Ruturaj Gaikwad. With Sanju Samson now in the squad, even his wicketkeeping role could see changes.
The Impact Player rule has further restricted Dhoni’s involvement, often limiting him to just a handful of deliveries. This has led to growing discussions around his place in the playing XI, especially after CSK’s 2023 title win.

Speaking on the matter, AB de Villiers made his stance clear. “I don’t see a role for MS batting at 8 or 9 and not really doing enough,” he said, pointing out the reduced influence Dhoni has in such a position.

He went a step further in his assessment. “If he is going to play the role of batting at 8 or 9 and not really captaining, then I just feel he is almost making up a spot,” AB de Villiers added, suggesting that the current role may not justify Dhoni’s inclusion.

Despite his criticism, de Villiers also offered a solution. “He has got to bat himself up to, at the latest, number 6,” he said. “I would even like to see him at 5 or 4 sometimes,” he concluded, emphasizing that Dhoni can still contribute meaningfully if given a bigger role.
