In the ongoing IPL 2024 season, the divisive ‘Impact Sub’ rule has sparked a wide array of opinions among former cricketers. One prominent voice in favour of the rule is the esteemed South African cricketer AB de Villiers. De Villiers views the rule favourably, acknowledging the abundance of runs scored by batters this season but refraining from expressing any concerns about it.
According to de Villiers, the implementation of the ‘Impact Sub’ rule has led to a noticeable surge in run-scoring, evident in the record-breaking totals witnessed in matches. “It is the batter’s game at the moment. They are having a feast, and it does not help that the wickets have been incredibly good at the IPL,” he stated. He also expressed his initial excitement when the rule was introduced, indicating that he does not perceive it to be harmful.
Expressing his disapproval of the rule during an open mic session in Delhi, Axar Patel, who is eyeing a spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad, voiced his scepticism about the utility of the Impact Player.

In stark contrast, de Villiers, affectionately known as Mr. 360°, offered a more optimistic perspective on the rule. In a recent discussion on his YouTube channel, he emphasized the favourable conditions for batsmen in the IPL and expressed his initial excitement when the rule was introduced. De Villiers believes it’s premature to label the rule negatively and doesn’t foresee any significant harm in its application.
Moreover, AB de Villiers took a moment to reflect on spinner Yuzvendra Chahal’s departure from the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise in 2021, describing it as a “heartbreaking moment.” He lamented Chahal’s departure, considering him an integral part of the team and expressing disbelief at his exclusion from the franchise.

“RCB let him (Chahal) go. It was a heartbreaking moment. He was a part of the furniture there and also their best bowler. It was crazy that he got left out of that franchise,” AB de Villiers remarked, recognizing Chahal’s contribution to RCB.
Having played for multiple franchises throughout his IPL career, Chahal’s journey underscores his prowess as one of the premier spinners in the tournament’s history.
