Abhinav Mukund, a former Indian cricketer, has offered his perspective on Shubman Gill’s recent indifferent form during the West Indies tour. Despite Gill’s string of low scores in the Caribbean, Mukund believes there is no need to worry about the young batsman’s performance. Shubman Gill had been in exceptional form since the beginning of 2023, displaying impressive performances across all formats, including a double century in the ODI format.
Shubman Gill continued his stellar run in IPL 2023, earning the coveted Orange Cap for scoring the most runs in the tournament. However, Gill’s form took a dip during the West Indies tour, where he was assigned the role of batting at No.3, replacing the experienced Cheteshwar Pujara. This change seemed to present challenges for the young batsman, leading to struggles in finding his form throughout the series.

In the Test series, Gill managed to score only 45 runs in three innings, and in the first ODI against the West Indies, he could muster only seven runs. Despite this rough patch, Abhinav Mukund believes it is too early to draw conclusions about Gill’s performance.
Speaking to JioCinema, Mukund emphasized the importance of not mixing formats when evaluating a player’s performance. He stated that Gill’s past two years have been phenomenal, and it is crucial not to associate his form with certain formats.
According to Mukund, Shubman Gill remains one of India’s top players in the ODI format, and he should be a part of the squad for the upcoming World Cup. Mukund expressed confidence that the young batter will bounce back with a strong comeback.
“It’s too early to talk about Shubman Gill’s failure because he has had a phenomenal last couple of years. It is important as a viewer and as an Indian cricket fan to not mess up formats,” said Abhinav Mukund.

He further added, “I feel we always tend to mix up formats and we tend to drop here and there, and we tend to associate form concerned with certain formats. The Test format is done with. As far as ODIs are concerned, Shubman Gill is our top player, and I think he should go to the World Cup. I don’t think his form is a concern. I’m sure he’ll be back with a bang.”
