Shubman Gill faced a tough challenge in the first T20I against West Indies, struggling against spin early on and getting dismissed for just three runs off nine deliveries. However, former cricketer Abhishek Nayar believes that Gill will bounce back more prepared and determined in the upcoming matches of the series.

Gill’s tour of the West Indies started with a two-match Test series, where he couldn’t deliver his best, scoring only 45 runs in total from two matches. His performance in the Test series left him and his fans disappointed. In the subsequent ODI series, his scores of 7 and 34 in the opening matches didn’t reflect his potential, but he made a significant comeback in the series decider.

In the third ODI, Gill showcased his class and talent, scoring an impressive 85 runs off 92 balls, which earned him the Player of the Match award. His brilliant knock played a vital role in India’s comprehensive 200-run victory over West Indies, securing a 2-1 series win.

However, in the first T20I, Gill once again struggled against spin, particularly against Akeal Hosein, who got him out for just three runs. India narrowly lost the match by four runs.

Abhishek Nayar, while speaking to JioCinema, expressed confidence in Gill’s ability to learn and adapt quickly. He expects the young opener to face the spin challenge more effectively in the remaining matches of the series. He said, “He will come more prepared and hungrier. Akeal Hosein is going to bowl to him in the next four matches with the new ball, and he is a bowler who will not give you room. Shubman’s strength is using his feet and employing the sweep shot.”

Abhishek Nayar emphasized that Gill needs to assess which shots to play during the powerplay when the ball is turning.

He added, “However, when the ball turns, he will have to figure out which shot to play to score runs in the powerplay. When you go to Guyana from here, there also you will get help for the spinners.”
