Amidst challenging times, Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) assistant coach, Abhishek Nayar, showered praise upon captain Shreyas Iyer, applauding his resilience and mental fortitude in the face of adversity. Shreyas’ journey has been marked by hurdles, particularly his absence from last year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a debilitating back injury.
Despite undergoing surgery and making a comeback during the Asia Cup 2023, his physical ailment persisted, limiting his participation. However, he displayed remarkable grit during the ODI World Cup 2023, amassing an impressive 530 runs from 11 matches at an average of 66.25 and a striking rate of 113.25.
Yet, the year 2024 posed fresh challenges for Shreyas Iyer. Following his underwhelming performances in the Test series against England, where he scored 31, 6, 0, and 4 in the first two games, he faced exclusion from the national Test team.

Additionally, he found himself omitted from the BCCI Central Contracts list, purportedly due to his absence from Ranji Trophy matches. Despite these setbacks, Shreyas faced another disappointment with his exclusion from India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2024. Nevertheless, Nayar lauded Shreyas’ resilient mindset, highlighting his unwavering positivity and determination to bounce back.
“He is one of the strongest people, mentally, I have ever known, just in terms of how he has accepted certain things that have happened to him. I would have seen a lot of people cribbing and talking about it, but I haven’t heard him whine about it or complain about it at all. The way he has approached life is in a positive manner – what is in front of you, you try and accept it,” expressed Abhishek Nayar during a pre-match press conference ahead of KKR’s upcoming fixture against Mumbai Indians.
Acknowledging Shreyas Iyer’s focused approach and resilience, Nayar emphasized the cricketer’s commitment to regaining his form and fitness. Despite the challenges beyond his control, Shreyas remains steadfast in his resolve to overcome adversity and make a comeback.

Shreyas Iyer’s contributions in IPL 2024 further underscore his leadership qualities and determination. With 251 runs from nine matches at an average of 41.83 and a strike rate of 137.16, he has led KKR admirably, guiding the team to the second spot on the points table. A victory in the upcoming match against Mumbai Indians could propel KKR closer to the top, reflecting Shreyas’ instrumental role in the team’s success.
