Abhishek Sharma has emerged as the star of the Asia Cup 2024 after dismantling Pakistan’s bowling attack for the second time in the tournament. The young Indian scored a scintillating 74, including a record-breaking half-century, surpassing Yuvraj Singh’s mark for the fastest fifty against Pakistan in T20Is. Before his dismissal, he combined with vice-captain Shubman Gill to put together a 105-run opening partnership, now the highest for India against their arch-rivals in T20Is.

For his match-winning performance, the 25-year-old was named Player of the Match. Speaking with skipper Suryakumar Yadav on BCCI.tv, Abhishek shed light on the seamless understanding he shares with Gill—a bond dating back to their junior cricket days.
“There’s one thing we’ve been talking about since U-12s. We know each other so well that I can predict which shot he will play, and he knows what I am going to do. Sometimes, it just happens through a meaningful glance,” Abhishek Sharma explained. He added, “I’ve asked him to signal me beforehand so I can be ready. Occasionally, you don’t expect him to play with soft hands, but that’s the quality he brings. I’m learning to adjust.”

Abhishek also credited Suryakumar Yadav’s guidance from the boundary line, saying it reminded him of his father.

“Today I remembered my father while batting. The way you stood there and suggested singles—he used to do the same. Sitting in front of the sightscreen is where I focus the most. Your presence helped me extend my innings,” he shared.

He did not forget to acknowledge the role of his family and support staff in his success. “It was special. Whenever my family supports us in the stands, the team tends to dominate. But the coach and captain’s messages are equally crucial—they give you confidence to perform at your best,” Abhishek Sharma concluded.
With performances like this, Abhishek Sharma is steadily cementing his reputation as one of India’s most promising white-ball talents, capable of turning high-pressure encounters into memorable victories.
