Abhishek Sharma endured a roller-coaster campaign during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, a tournament ultimately won by the India national cricket team, which defeated the New Zealand national cricket team in the final. Entering the competition as the world’s top-ranked T20I batter, expectations were sky-high for the young opener, but his journey in the tournament was anything but smooth.

Abhishek’s campaign began on a disappointing note. The left-handed batter struggled to find form early in the tournament, registering three consecutive ducks, which immediately put him under the spotlight. He then managed just 15 runs during India’s 76-run defeat against the South Africa national cricket team, further intensifying criticism around his place in the playing XI.
However, Abhishek showed signs of a comeback during a crucial encounter against the Zimbabwe national cricket team, where he produced a timely half-century to help India stay alive in the competition. Despite that effort, he managed only 19 runs combined across the next two innings, leading to widespread suggestions that India might drop him ahead of the final.

But the team management, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, decided to back the youngster for the title clash. Their faith proved decisive. In the final, Abhishek delivered when it mattered most, smashing a blistering 52 off just 21 balls, an innings that included six fours and three towering sixes. His explosive start helped India post a massive 255/5, setting the platform for their eventual triumph.

Interestingly, Abhishek used a bat borrowed from teammate Shivam Dube during the final. Dube later revealed the story behind the moment. “Yes, he came and asked me if he could borrow my bat, and I said yes. I’m really happy that he scored runs in the final,” Dube told The Indian Express.
After the victory, Abhishek Sharma admitted the tournament had been mentally challenging but credited the unwavering support from the team management.

“The coach and the captain had faith in me,” he said. “Even I was doubting myself because it wasn’t an easy tournament for me. But everyone kept telling me that I would win one big game for the team.” Reflecting on the experience, Abhishek added that the support from teammates helped him navigate one of the toughest phases of his young international career.
