Shahid Afridi Applauds Virat Kohli Reaching 50+ Average In All The Formats

The Indian skipper, Virat Kohli led from the front in another chase as he remains unbeaten on 72 off 52 balls during India’s 7-wicket victory over South Africa in the second T20I of the three-match series in Mohali on Wednesday. India now has an unassailable lead of 1-0 in the three-match series after the opening game being washed out in Dharamsala.

With his splendid knock which was supported by 4 fours and 3 sixes, Virat has now surpassed Rohit Sharma to become the leading run-scorer in T20Is. Kohli now has amassed as many as 2,441 runs from 71 T20Is as compared to Rohit’s 2,434 runs from 97 matches. Needing 150 to win, the visitors got off to a solid start despite losing Rohit in the powerplay itself.

Former Pakistan all-rounder, Shahid Afridi applauded Kohli, calling him a “great player”. The International Cricket Council (ICC) congratulated Virat on his achievement, saying: “Tests: 53.14 ODIs: 60.31 T20Is: 50.85 Virat Kohli once again averages over 50 in all three international formats.” 

Afridi retweeted the ICC’s post and wrote, “Congratulations @imVkohli You are a great player indeed, wish you continued success, keep entertaining cricket fans all around the world.”

Now, Kohli is the only contemporary batsman who has an average of above 50 in all three formats. Chasing a target of 150, the Indian team got off to a solid start despite losing Rohit in the powerplay itself. The Indian skipper then added 61 runs with Shikhar Dhawan for the 2nd wicket to put India in a commanding position.

Dhawan, who made 40 off 31 deliveries, was dismissed owing to a brilliant catch by an airborne David Miller at long-on with Tabraiz Shamsi getting the breakthrough. But Virat, who went on to complete his 22nd T20I fifty in 71 matches, made sure that India goes past the winning line without more hiccups along with Shreyas Iyer, who scored 16 including the winning four.

India will be locking horns with South Africa in the third and the final T20I at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on September 22, Wednesday.
