Huge fire broke out at a building near the entry gate of the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday, September 8, hours ahead of the Asia Cup 2022 Super 4 match between India and Afghanistan. Fumes could be seen from inside the stadium as fans were making their way into the venue for the dead rubber.
The fire broke out at a makeshift office outside the popular cricket stadium but it was controlled within a few minutes. There was no delay reported as the broadcasters and the teams got on with the pre-match routines in Dubai.
India and Afghanistan have both been knocked out of the race to the final of the Asia Cup 2022. Thursday’s match will determine the 3rd and 4th-placed teams in the Super 4 stage. Pakistan and Sri Lanka qualified for the final, which will be held in Dubai on Sunday, September 11.
India was at the top of the table in Group A after beating Hong Kong and Pakistan but they lost the game against Pakistan by 5 wickets and to Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in the Super 4 stage. India’s hopes relied on Afghanistan, who took on Pakistan in Sharjah on Wednesday, but Mohammad Nabi and his men lost to Babar Azam’s team by 1 wicket in a last-over thriller.
As per reports, the fire incident took place before either of the teams arrived that the Dubai stadium. Furthermore, no casualties have been reported so far. It is also being reported that the fire took place outside the premises of the venue, with a building near the Dubai Stadium set ablaze. The reason for the fire is not clear at the moment. A huge cloud of smoke could be seen outside the venue.
