Ajantha Mendis made his entry into international cricket as a revelation. Not many batsmen managed to pick him during his inception. However, with time, batsmen started reading his variations out of the hand and eventually started dominating him.
During his second ODI series against India on his home soil, Mendis got the better of the Indian batsmen. He ended the three-match series, which was also his debut series, as the highest wicket-taker. He clinched 26 wickets in three Tests at an average of 18.38, an economy rate of 2.92 and a strike rate of 37.6.
In the first ODI at Colombo, he registered figures of 9-4-21-3, which included wickets of Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Munaf Patel. His spell was instrumental in India being dismissed on 146 in 46 overs.
