Mumbai batters Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer were involved in a heated argument with the on-field umpire during Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match against Jammu & Kashmir on Friday, January 24, at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC in Mumbai. The controversy erupted after Iyer was given out in what appeared to be a dubious decision.

Shreyas Iyer, who was batting on 17 runs from 15 balls, was caught behind by wicketkeeper Kanhaiya Wadhawan off Auqib Nabi’s bowling on the second ball of the 22nd over. The core of the debate was whether it was a catch or not, which made Rahane visibly upset with the decision of the umpire.

A video of the animated conversation of Ajinkya Rahane with the umpires as Iyer walked in became one of the social media virals. Iyer’s stay at the crease was brief. He was the fourth Mumbai batter dismissed in the second innings. Iyer struck four boundaries during his stay for 17 runs. Mumbai did not enjoy too much with those quick runs scored by him.

His exit again put the batting team under stress. Initially, in the first innings, it was the batting failures of both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma for mere 4 and 3 runs respectively. Still, these two gave Mumbai a good opening at the commencement of the second innings. Rohit scored 28 runs off 35 balls with two fours and three sixes.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for 26 runs off 51 balls, as four fours were seen while his wicket was taken by Yudhvir Singh Charak. Rohit’s dismissal was the first casualty in the second innings. He and Jaiswal had put together 54 runs for the first wicket.  Hardik Tamore came soon after, dismissed for a mere 1 run, and then Jaiswal was sent back by Yudhvir, caught in the gully by Yawer Hassan.

With Rahane, Iyer added 29 runs for the fourth wicket before he went with just two overs to spare for lunch. Shivam Dube, at No. 6, failed to make an impact once again, departing for a duck after facing just four balls as Mumbai’s batting malaise continues where again they fail to build substantial partnerships.
