Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Ajinkya Rahane has rekindled hopes of a comeback to the Indian cricket team with an emotional and determined message during the ongoing IPL 2025. Despite being out of India’s white-ball setup for nearly a decade and last featuring in a Test match in 2023, Rahane’s desire to don the Indian jersey remains as strong as ever.

The seasoned right-hander, best remembered for leading India to a historic Test series win in Australia in 2020-21, has been quietly working behind the scenes. While Indian selectors have focused heavily on grooming younger talent, Rahane has kept his head down, staying fit, scoring consistently in domestic cricket, and showing great discipline, waiting patiently for an opportunity.

Speaking during Star Sports’ Press Room session, Ajinkya Rahane said, “I would love to be back in the Indian set-up again. The desire, the hunger, the fire is still there. Fitness-wise, I am right up there. I’m just taking it one game at a time and focusing on this IPL. Let’s see what the future holds.”

While not obsessing over selection, Rahane made it clear that his goal remains to represent India once again. “I’m someone who never gives up. I give more than 100 per cent every time I’m on the field. That’s something I’ve always believed in—controlling what I can and letting the rest follow,” he added.

Rahane, now leading KKR, emphasised the importance of daily discipline. He continues to train intensely during the off-season and follows a strict diet and recovery routine, all in pursuit of staying match-ready. It’s a reflection of his enduring passion for the sport, even after years away from the international limelight.

So far in IPL 2025, the veteran has scored 297 runs in 10 matches at a healthy average of 37 and a strike rate nearing 150—solid numbers that underscore his value in T20 cricket.

“Every morning I wake up thinking about the goals I still want to achieve. There’s nothing bigger than representing India. That dream hasn’t faded. I’m enjoying my cricket, and that’s the most important thing. The passion is still alive,” Ajinkya Rahane concluded.

KKR, meanwhile, are locked in a tight mid-table battle, currently placed seventh with nine points from 10 matches. They next face Rajasthan Royals on May 4—a crucial encounter that could decide their playoff fate. Whether Rahane’s India dream materializes again remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the fire within him hasn’t dimmed.
