Ajit Agarkar is set to receive a one-year extension as chairman of India’s senior selection committee, with the BCCI understood to be keen on keeping him in charge until June 2027. The move reflects the board’s preference for continuity after a highly successful phase in which India won three ICC titles under Agarkar’s watch: the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup.

India also reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final at home, further strengthening the case for stability in the selection setup. According to the report, the BCCI feels Agarkar has overseen a smooth transition and has not shied away from making bold calls. An official quoted by The Indian Express said the board was happy with the fearless decision-making and intended to speak to him on the sidelines of IPL matches.

The continuity argument is also helped by the fact that RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha, who are part of the current panel, are still relatively new in their roles and have not yet completed a year in office.

Ajit Agarkar’s tenure has coincided with a major reshaping of Indian cricket, especially in the Test arena, where senior names such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin stepped away from the format.

During the same period, Shubman Gill was appointed Test captain and Suryakumar Yadav took charge of the T20I side. India’s red-ball results have been mixed, including a drawn series in England under Gill and a home defeat to South Africa, but the shorter formats have brought more consistent success.

The selection committee under Agarkar has also shown a willingness to back form over reputation. One notable example was the recall of Ishan Kishan for the 2026 T20 World Cup, a move that followed the panel reassessing his case and prioritising aggressive combinations at the top of the order. The same approach has defined much of Agarkar’s tenure, with the committee open to giving players another chance once their performances demand it.
