Ajit Agarkar has informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he intends to step down as chairman of the senior men’s selection committee when his current tenure ends on October 4. According to a Hindustan Times report, Agarkar communicated his decision to the board on Thursday, following earlier discussions in February about finding alternatives when his term concluded.

Agarkar took charge as India’s chief selector in July 2023 and has overseen a significant period of transition in Indian cricket. His tenure has included major changes in leadership and personnel across formats, while the selection committee has also handled several important squad decisions.

“In his communication, Agarkar has cited his previous discussions with the board in February, when he had first alerted top decision makers to look for alternatives at the end of his current term,” a BCCI official told Hindustan Times.

The development came shortly after the BCCI’s 95th Annual General Meeting in Mumbai, where office-bearers were authorised to take a decision on matters concerning the selection committees. However, the AGM did not formally confirm Agarkar’s replacement. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia indicated that the board still had time to make a final decision.

Agarkar’s current tenure was originally extended until October 4, and reports had previously suggested that he could remain in the role for longer. His latest communication, however, indicates that the BCCI is now preparing for a possible change at the top of the senior selection committee.

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel and current selector Pragyan Ojha have emerged as potential candidates for the position, although the BCCI has yet to officially announce Agarkar’s successor.

The BCCI’s decision will be closely watched as the board prepares for another important phase in Indian cricket. Agarkar’s committee has already overseen several major transitions, including leadership changes and the emergence of a new generation of players. The board is also expected to address vacancies in the junior selection committee. Alongside the decision on the senior chairman, the BCCI is looking to fill all five positions in the junior selection panel.

For now, Agarkar remains the chairman of the senior men’s selection committee until his existing tenure concludes. The BCCI has indicated that a final decision on the selection committee will be taken before then, leaving open the possibility of either an extension or the appointment of a new chairman.
