Indian pacer Akash Deep recently shared a heartwarming story about how former captain Virat Kohli played a pivotal role during the Gabba Test in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). Akash revealed that Kohli lent him one of his signature MRF bats, which became instrumental in helping India avoid a follow-on during a crucial phase of the match.
India began the series on a high note, securing an emphatic win in Perth to take a 1-0 lead. However, Australia bounced back strongly, winning three of the remaining four Tests to reclaim the coveted trophy after a decade of India’s dominance. The Gabba Test, in particular, presented significant challenges, with rain affecting play and India fighting to save the match.
In a critical moment, Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah forged a vital 47-run partnership for the 10th wicket. Their gritty stand ensured India avoided the follow-on, virtually guaranteeing a draw in the rain-hit match. Reflecting on the innings, Akash credited Kohli’s thoughtful gesture for boosting his confidence.

“Yes, that was Virat bhaiyya’s bat, the one with the MRF logo that everyone knows,” Akash Deep said during an interview with PTI. “Bhaiyya himself asked me, ‘Do you need a bat?’ I said, ‘Yes, who wouldn’t want your bat?’ He then presented it to me.”
Akash Deep admitted that he was initially hesitant to approach Kohli, given the star player’s stature and intense focus during matches. However, Kohli’s proactive and supportive gesture left a lasting impression on him. “It’s always a bit intimidating to ask someone like Virat bhaiyya for something during a match. But he, on his own, offered me the bat, which meant a lot,” Akash added.
Joining Bumrah when India needed 33 runs to avoid the follow-on, Akash Deep showcased remarkable composure. He reached the mark with a cut shot over the slips and followed it with a memorable six over midwicket, sealing a critical moment for the team.

This wasn’t the first time Kohli had extended such generosity. Akash recalled a similar gesture during the home series against Bangladesh when Kohli gifted him another signature bat, highlighting the camaraderie and mutual respect within the Indian team. Kohli’s leadership and support, even off the field, continue to inspire his teammates, creating a positive and encouraging environment within the squad.
