Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s excitement was palpable as a successful review led to the dismissal of Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam in the ongoing second Test at Green Park, Kanpur. Fast bowler Akash Deep, brimming with confidence, convinced Rohit to opt for the review after trapping Shadman leg-before-wicket (LBW) during the first session of Day 1.
The final Test between India and Bangladesh got off to an intriguing start, with Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj unable to make early breakthroughs despite some probing spells with the new ball. Their inconsistency opened the door for Akash Deep, who stepped up and provided the much-needed breakthrough. His persistence paid off as he dismissed Shadman, who had looked comfortable scoring 24 off 36 balls, including four boundaries.

Shadman’s dismissal wasn’t straightforward, though. After Akash’s delivery struck him on the pads, the on-field umpire initially gave the decision in favor of the batter. However, Akash’s conviction prompted him to persuade Rohit for a review. Rohit, showing faith in his bowler, consulted with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant before signalling for the DRS review.

There were concerns that the ball might either miss the stumps or be an umpire’s call, but the replays confirmed that it was hitting the stumps, resulting in three reds on the screen. Shadman had to depart, leaving the Bangladesh side reeling at 29 for 2.
Akash Deep’s impact in the series has been notable. He picked up two crucial wickets for 19 runs in his five-over spell during Bangladesh’s first innings in the series opener in Chennai. However, he had a wicketless spell in the second innings, leading to speculation about his inclusion for the second Test in Kanpur, where conditions seemed more favorable for spinners.

Rohit, after choosing to bowl first, expressed confidence in his three seamers making early inroads on a slightly soft pitch. Reflecting on India’s batting struggles in the previous match, he emphasized the team’s resilience and ability to bounce back. “We didn’t start well with the bat in the first game, but we found a way to score, and the bowlers did their job. I expect a tough fight from Bangladesh, but we have the experience to recover and put up a strong performance,” Rohit stated confidently.
