Akash Deep’s name is now etched in Indian cricketing history after his sensational 10-wicket haul led India to a commanding 336-run victory over England at Edgbaston. But beyond the headlines and the applause, there’s a deeply personal story that adds even more weight to his achievement. In a heartfelt gesture after the match, Akash Deep dedicated his performance to his sister, who is currently battling stage 3 cancer.

In an exclusive conversation with India Today, Akash Deep’s sister opened up about the bond they share and how her brother has been a pillar of strength during her treatment. She recalled their emotional meeting at the airport before he departed for the England tour. Despite her own health struggles, she had just one message for her brother: play for the country, and don’t worry about me.
“It’s a proud moment for India—he took 10 wickets. Before he left, we went to see him at the airport. I told him, ‘I’m absolutely fine, don’t worry about me. Just do well for India.’ I’m in stage 3 and the doctors say the treatment will continue for another six months,” she shared.

What moved her even more was Akash Deep’s unexpected public acknowledgment. “I didn’t know he would speak about it. Maybe we weren’t ready to talk about it openly, but the way he got emotional—it shows how deeply he cares. He’s the one I’m closest to in the family, and despite everything happening at home, he still performed at that level. It’s a big thing,” she said with pride.

She also revealed how Akash Deep continued to visit her in the hospital even during the IPL, where he was playing for the Lucknow Super Giants.
“He would come to see me either before or after matches. No matter how busy he is, family always comes first for him.”
