Akila Dananjaya Banned For One Year For Illegal Bowling Action

Sri Lanka’s mystery spinner  Akila Dananjaya was banned on Thursday from bowling in International Cricket for one year after an independent assessment of his action, an International Cricket Council (ICC) statement said. The 25-year-old was assessed after the legality of his bowling action came under the scanner by match officials in the first test against New Zealand in Galle from August 14-18. The spinner subsequently underwent the independent assessment in Chennai on 29 August, which revealed that he has bowled in an action which was illegal.

Akila Dananjaya was earlier suspended from bowling in December 2018. After that remedial work on his bowling action, he was reassessed and permitted to start bowling in February 2019. As per the latest report says the player’s second report within a two-year period, the first of which will lead to a suspension, he is eventually suspended from bowling in international cricket for a period of one year. He will again be entitled to approach the ICC for a re-assessment of his bowling action after the expiry of his one-year ban period.

However, he has played six Test matches, 36 One Day Internationals and 22 Twenty20 Internationals till now. He has taken 106 international wickets across formats so far. His last played for Sri Lanka was against New Zealand in the Twenty20 International game in Pallekele before he left out of their upcoming tour of Pakistan.
