Andre Russell has always been synonymous with power-hitting in T20 cricket, but in IPL 2026, the former Kolkata Knight Riders superstar has embraced a refreshing new role—mentor and “power coach” for the franchise that defined much of his career. After years of dismantling bowling attacks for Kolkata Knight Riders, Russell is now passing on his expertise to the next generation.

And in typical Andre Russell fashion, he summed up his job description in one unforgettable line: “I teach people how to hit sixes.” It’s simple, direct, and perfectly reflective of a player who built his legacy on brute force and fearless intent.

At 37, Andre Russell’s transition from match-winner to mentor feels like a natural progression. Despite stepping away from active IPL duties, he insists his mindset remains unchanged. “It’s about giving back to the guys I’ve played with and against,” he shared, highlighting his desire to contribute beyond personal performances.

Russell’s IPL numbers underline why his presence in the dressing room still carries immense weight. In 140 matches, he scored 2,651 runs at a staggering strike rate of 174.17—one of the best in league history—while also picking up 123 wickets. For KKR alone, he featured in 133 games, claiming 122 wickets and becoming only the second player after Sunil Narine to cross the 100-wicket mark for the franchise.

His impact wasn’t just statistical. With 16 Player-of-the-Match awards in KKR colours, Andre Russell repeatedly delivered in crunch moments, often turning games single-handedly.

His release ahead of the 2026 auction came as a surprise to many, especially after being retained for ₹12 crore earlier. The move, which freed up significant purse space, marked the end of an era. Andre Russell then chose not to enter the auction, quietly closing the chapter on his IPL playing career.

Now, as he steps into a mentorship role, Russell’s influence continues—only this time, it’s about shaping match-winners rather than being one himself.
