Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald sparked controversy with his remarks about the fiery confrontation between Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah and Australia’s Sam Konstas during the final over of the first day of the Sydney Test. McDonald labelled the behaviour of the Indian players as “intimidating” and expressed surprise over the ICC’s decision not to penalize any Indian player for their aggressive celebrations following Usman Khawaja’s dismissal.
Speaking after the second day’s play, McDonald firmly backed Sam Konstas and criticized the Indian team’s actions. “My conversation with him [Konstas] was around whether he was okay. Clearly, the way India celebrated was quite intimidating,” McDonald told reporters. He described the celebrations as overwhelming, particularly when Indian players swarmed around Konstas after Khawaja’s dismissal.

Andrew McDonald emphasized his duty to ensure that Sam Konstas was mentally prepared to continue in the game. “It’s within the laws of the game, but when an opposition swarms a non-striker like that, we have a duty of care to ensure our player is okay and in the right headspace for the next day’s play,” he explained.
When questioned about the acceptability of such behaviour, Andre McDonald deferred to the ICC’s judgment, placing faith in match referee Andy Pycroft and the umpires. “There were no fines or punishments, so it’s clearly deemed acceptable. If the officials think it’s satisfactory, then that sets the benchmark,” he noted.
The heated exchange unfolded when Bumrah, eager to complete the final over of the day, grew visibly frustrated as Usman Khawaja took his time at the crease. Konstas, stationed at the non-striker’s end, reportedly said something to provoke Bumrah. The Indian skipper retaliated with a few sharp words, prompting an umpire intervention to de-escalate the situation.

The drama climaxed when Bumrah dismissed Khawaja on the final ball of the day. The Indian fielders, including Prasidh Krishna and Virat Kohli, erupted in exuberant celebration, visibly directing some of their energy toward Konstas, who stood nearby. Despite the intensity of the moment, no sanctions were imposed by the ICC, leaving McDonald and the Australian camp questioning the standards being upheld in the series.
