The Head Coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Andy Flower, has addressed rumours surrounding Virat Kohli’s potential return as captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Following Faf du Plessis’ exit, speculation has been rife that Kohli could once again take up the leadership mantle. However, Flower clarified that no decision has been made yet regarding the team’s new skipper.

“Well, you’re going to have to wait for the outcome. It’s a new era that we are going into, the start of a three-year cycle, and I’m sure the anticipation will be good for you,” Andy Flower told SportsTak during the ILT20. “You can ask me as often as you like, but that communication has not happened yet,” he added, putting an end to immediate speculation.

Virat Kohli’s journey as RCB captain began in 2013, and under his leadership, the team reached the IPL final in 2016. However, after the 2021 season, the iconic batter stepped down from the role, although he has stepped in as captain on occasions when required, such as during Faf du Plessis’ injury in the 2023 season.

Despite not officially holding the captaincy, Kohli remains a pivotal figure in the team, actively participating in crucial on-field and off-field decisions. The batting maestro has faced scrutiny recently due to inconsistent form, including in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he managed just one century in a series India lost 1-3.

However, Kohli’s IPL performance remains a bright spot. In the 2023 season, he was the league’s top scorer, amassing 741 runs in 15 matches, showcasing his unmatched ability to dominate in the T20 format.

As RCB enters a new phase, the team has bolstered its squad with significant additions from the mega-auction. Players like Phil Salt, Krunal Pandya, Liam Livingstone, Tim David, and Josh Hazlewood have joined the ranks, adding depth and balance. The franchise hopes that a combination of fresh talent and strong leadership can finally end their long-standing quest for a maiden IPL title. Whether Kohli returns as skipper or not, his presence remains a vital asset for RCB as they prepare for the new season.
