Royal Challengers Bengaluru head coach Andy Flower has provided a positive update on star pacer Josh Hazlewood ahead of IPL 2026, easing concerns around the Australian quick’s fitness and availability. Hazlewood, who has been out of competitive action for several months, recently rejoined the RCB camp after recovering from hamstring and Achilles injuries.

He had missed key assignments, including the 2025–26 Ashes and the T20 World Cup, making his return a significant boost for the franchise. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Andy Flower praised Hazlewood’s physical condition and preparation.

“Hazlewood arrived yesterday. He is looking fit. I did comment to him that he looks even younger than I remember him, so he has enjoyed some good downtime, but he has worked hard to get himself back up to full fitness,” Andy Flower said.

Despite the encouraging signs, RCB are unlikely to rush him back into action. Hazlewood will miss the opening matches, including the IPL 2026 opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad, as the team management focuses on carefully managing his workload.

“It is great to have him here. It is even great to have him here in our dressing room and in the meetings. He would not be ready for tomorrow, because he has just got off the plane and we will be monitoring his fitness very closely,” Andy Flower added.

Hazlewood’s absence in the early phase could be felt, especially considering his impact last season. The Australian pacer played a pivotal role in RCB’s maiden IPL title win, picking up 22 wickets in just 12 matches and leading the attack with precision and control.

While fans may have to wait to see him in action, his presence in the dressing room itself is invaluable. Young pacers in the squad are expected to benefit from his experience and guidance, particularly during high-pressure situations. If managed well, Hazlewood is likely to return in the latter half of the tournament — a phase where his skill set could once again prove decisive for RCB’s campaign.
