Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews has felt disappointed and shocked after their early exit from the Asia Cup 2018 by losing both the games in group stages (Group B).
After suffering a 137-run defeat against Bangladesh in the tournament opener, Sri Lanka lost their next game against Afghanistan by 91 runs. While Sri Lanka failed to chase 262 runs against Bangladesh by replying only 124 runs, they once again failed to chase 250 runs against Afghanistan by replying only 158 runs.
After the Afghanistan game, Mathews said, “This was shocking from the whole team. Even in the first game, we got all out for 150-odd. Congratulations to Afghanistan as they outplayed us.”
Mathews has pointed out their batting failure to lose the game against Afghanistan. He feels that the bowlers did well and the fielders responded better from the last game as they missed some crucial catches against Bangladesh.
Mathews said, “We got a good start but again lost our way in the middle overs. The bowlers did well, the fielding had also improved from the last match. It’s just the batting unit that let us down.”
The Sri Lankan captain has felt shocked and disappointed with their performances in this Asia Cup as he claimed that they couldn’t handle the pressure.
Mathews added, “We played better cricket in the later parts of the South Africa series. Just disappointing to see the way the boys went about it. We couldn’t handle pressure. Not passing 150 on both occasions is very shocking and disappointing.”
Meanwhile, Afghanistan skipper Asghar Afghan credited everyone, including their supporters, for that historic victory as it was their first victory against Sri Lanka in the international cricket history.
He said in the post-match presentation, “Every batsman executed his plans; we especially spoke of partnerships. Must credit our fielders too, they did well. When you want to play to win you play positively. Our spinners, batsmen and bowlers all did well. I would also like to say thanks to the crowd for their support.”
