After enduring their lowest-ever total in Test cricket, Team India is mounting a resilient fightback in the second innings of the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru. By Stumps on Day 3, India posted a solid 231/3, still trailing New Zealand by 125 runs but showing renewed spirit. In response to New Zealand’s commanding 402-run first-innings total, the Indian openers laid a strong foundation.

Virat Kohli and Sarfaraz Khan brought India back in the game

Skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli then came together to form a crucial partnership that lifted Indian hopes. Rohit, who looked comfortable at the crease, scored 52 off 63 deliveries before losing his wicket shortly after reaching his half-century. His departure brought Sarfaraz Khan to the crease, who joined forces with Kohli to build a steady third-wicket stand.

Kohli, looking determined and in good touch, made a well-earned 70 off 102 balls. However, heartbreak struck on the final ball of the day, as Kohli was dismissed, leaving India in a precarious but hopeful position. Sarfaraz, meanwhile, continued to bat with confidence, remaining unbeaten on 70 off 78 deliveries.

Former India captain Anil Kumble, speaking on JioCinema after the day’s play, expressed optimism about India’s chances of taking control. “India will get close or could even take the lead by lunch on Day 4. If they can stretch the lead to 150 or so, there’s a real chance they can win this Test,” Anil Kumble remarked.

He further explained how an Indian lead would increase pressure on New Zealand. “Once India crosses the 125-run deficit, every additional run will be a burden on New Zealand. India’s batters know how to capitalize on this kind of situation, and they could make it very difficult for New Zealand if they get ahead.”
