Another day. Another ODI. Another Rohit Sharma – Virat Kohli partnership. And on top of that all, another run-out to break that partnership. The last line must have been against the need of a plethora of Indian fans who would have expected India to count on the strong start, but, it is the reality.
On the third delivery of the 26th over, Sharma played a Morne Morkel delivery with soft hands to Jean-Paul Duminy at the point. After watching Sharma take that initial start, Kohli ran in full flow to reach the striker’s end.
It was at this point when Sharma realized that he wouldn’t be able to complete the run and hence, refused the run. By this time, Kohli was way too far to return back to the bowlers safely. Furthermore, Duminy under-arm direct-hit saw Kohli well-short of his crease.
As one would expect, Kohli was certainly not happy with his vice-captain’s decision. The duo has been involved in run-outs several times in international cricket. During Sharma’s first two ODI double hundreds, Kohli was run-out when the former was on the other end. The Indians fans would be hoping Sharma to play other such innings.

If Kohli’s run-out was not enough to hurt India, Ajinkya Rahane, who came in to bat at No. 4, was also run-out a few overs later. Rahane had hit a Kagiso Rabada straight to Morne Morkel at mid-on. He set up for the run straight away, but, Sharma refused to respond to his partner’s call. As a result of which, Rahane had to take the long walk back.
