Young Indian pacer Anshul Kamboj continued his impressive run in the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand, picking up a wicket in his very first over during the second match in Wellington on Saturday, November 7. India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bowl first, and the visitors quickly put the hosts under pressure with some disciplined bowling.

Kamboj was introduced into the attack in the ninth over. Although Henry Nicholls welcomed him with a boundary off the third delivery, the young pacer responded brilliantly on the very next ball. He pulled his length back and generated movement into the left-handed batter.

Nicholls misjudged the bounce and ended up getting an inside edge onto his boot. The ball then rolled back towards the stumps and struck the base of the off-stump, leaving the batter bowled in an unfortunate manner.

Nicholls departed for 11 runs off 26 deliveries, further worsening New Zealand’s position. Having already lost openers Tim Seifert (0) and Will Young (6), the hosts slipped to 23/3. Auqib Nabi had earlier claimed both opening wickets, while Anshul Kamboj added another breakthrough to India’s tally.

Anshul Kamboj has started repaying the faith shown in him by the Indian team management. Despite a difficult beginning to his international ODI career, the youngster has delivered encouraging performances in the ongoing series.

The pacer was particularly impressive in the first ODI at Auckland, finishing with figures of 2/22 in his 10 overs at an economy rate of just 2.20. His ability to maintain tight lines, control the scoring rate and pick up crucial wickets played an important role in India’s five-wicket victory. His performance also earned him the Player of the Match award.

The young pacer will now look to maintain his consistency and make the most of the opportunities coming his way.
