Arjun Tendulkar had an eventful start in IPL 2024, claiming the prized wicket of Marcus Stoinis in his debut over. However, his joy was short-lived when third umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal overturned the decision after Stoinis reviewed it. The match began with Hardik Pandya winning the toss and opting to field.

Arjun Tendulkar, replacing Jasprit Bumrah, was handed the new ball for the second over. He bowled impressively and thought he had Stoinis trapped LBW with a well-pitched delivery on middle and leg. Tendulkar’s animated appeal was upheld by the on-field umpire, and he celebrated the wicket. But Stoinis, with a knowing smile, immediately called for a review.

The replay showed the ball would have gone over the stumps, leading to the decision being overturned. Tendulkar’s initial elation quickly turned to disappointment as Stoinis stayed at the crease.

By the end of the powerplay, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) were 49/2, having lost Stoinis eventually, while KL Rahul remained steady at 18* off 13 balls. Post-toss, MI captain Hardik Pandya explained his decision to field first at the Wankhede Stadium, citing the favorable chasing conditions.

“Chasing is always better at Wankhede as the ball comes on nicely,” he said. He also emphasized the importance of character in their final match, despite being out of playoff contention, suggesting that the situation might allow them to play with more freedom. Changes in the lineup included Arjun Tendulkar for Bumrah, Dewald Brevis for the injured Tilak Varma, and Tim David being rested.
