Arshad Khan, who turns 28 soon, carved a special place in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy history with a phenomenal spell during Madhya Pradesh’s Elite Group B clash against Chandigarh at the Jadavpur University Complex in Kolkata. His sensational figures not only powered MP to a dominant seven-wicket win with 36 balls remaining but also broke the long-standing tournament record.

Until this match, the best figures in the SMAT belonged jointly to Hyderabad’s T Ravi Teja and Gujarat’s Arzan Nagwaswalla, both having registered 6/13 in October 2023. Before them, DS Punia held the record with 6/14 in the 2015 season. Arshad went one step further, producing a dream spell that will be remembered for years.

The left-arm seamer made full use of the early morning movement, striking twice in his very first over to remove openers Arjun Azad and skipper Shivam Bhambri for identical ducks—one ball and four balls respectively. His third breakthrough came at the end of his second over when he dismissed wicketkeeper Nikhil Thakur. Returning for a late burst at the death, Arshad delivered a magical 19th over, picking up three more wickets and sealing his place in the record books.

Among the Madhya Pradesh attack, no other bowler managed an economy below six, with Kumar Kartikeya and Rahul Batham accounting for the remaining wickets. Chandigarh, put in to bat first, could only muster 134, thanks largely to Manan Vohra’s fighting 52 off 43.

Chasing a modest target, Madhya Pradesh had an early wobble after losing two wickets inside the first two overs. But Harsh Gawli and Harpreet Singh steadied the innings with a fluent 105-run partnership. Harpreet fell just two short of a well-deserved fifty, while Gawli remained unbeaten on a brilliant 74 off 40 balls, laced with six fours and five sixes, guiding MP to a comfortable victory.
