India’s victory in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Final brought unforgettable celebrations, but one brief on-field moment involving Arshdeep Singh and Daryl Mitchell also caught the attention of fans. After the match, the Indian pacer revealed that he apologised to Mitchell for an accidental throw during the game, addressing the situation in a post-match conversation with Harsha Bhogle.

The incident took place in the 10th over of New Zealand’s innings at the packed Narendra Modi Stadium. Mitchell had started the over aggressively, smashing two big sixes off Arshdeep and putting the young Indian pacer under pressure. Sensing an opportunity to continue the attack, the New Zealand batter went for another big shot on the next ball, which was a wide full toss outside off stump.

However, Mitchell did not connect it well and ended up toe-ending the ball toward the extra-cover region. In a quick attempt to create a run-out chance, Arshdeep collected the ball and fired a throw toward the striker’s end. Unfortunately, the throw struck Mitchell on the thigh, leading to immediate frustration from the Kiwi batter.

Mitchell walked down the pitch and expressed his displeasure with animated gestures. India captain Suryakumar Yadav quickly stepped in, placing a hand on Mitchell’s shoulder and speaking to both players to calm the situation. The on-field umpires also intervened briefly to ensure the moment did not escalate further.

After the match, Arshdeep clarified that the throw was completely accidental and that he made sure to apologise to Mitchell immediately.

“I just ran off to apologise to Mitchell. The ball reverse-swung when I threw it and it hit him,” Arshdeep said. Reflecting on the team’s historic triumph, he added: “Right now it feels great but the emotions will sink in the next 2-4 days.”

Speaking about the team’s bowling mindset, the pacer also explained the strategy behind their approach in big games.

“As a bowler, our role is to restrict them to under 250 if we score 250,” he said. “And when bowling first, it’s just to restrict them to as little as possible.”
