On Saturday, July 27, Asitha Fernando executed a spectacular catch to dismiss Shubman Gill in the first T20I between Sri Lanka and India at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Sri Lanka’s captain, Charith Asalanka, won the toss and opted to bowl first against the reigning world champions. Despite this strategic choice, the Sri Lankan bowlers struggled to secure an early wicket, allowing India to get off to an electrifying start.

Openers Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal unleashed a flurry of aggressive shots, heralding the beginning of the Suryakumar Yadav era with flair. The intent was clear from the outset as Team India showcased a revamped and aggressive approach to T20 cricket under new head coach Gautam Gambhir. In the very first over, Jaiswal and Gill struck three boundaries, signaling their aggressive intent.

India’s innings gained momentum rapidly, with the team reaching 50 runs in just four overs. Both openers matched each other shot for shot, making the most of the powerplay. The sixth over, bowled by Dilshan Madushanka, appeared to be ending on a high note for India as Gill hit two fours and a six off the first five deliveries.

However, the final ball of the powerplay saw a dramatic shift. Madushanka bowled a slower ball just outside the off stump, and Gill, aiming to loft it over the bowler’s head, mistimed his shot. The ball went straight up, offering a catching opportunity. Initially hesitant, Asitha Fernando quickly committed to the catch, diving forward to complete a stunning dismissal.

Gill’s brisk innings came to an end at 34 runs off 16 balls, including six fours and a six. The breakthrough provided Sri Lanka with much-needed relief. On the very next delivery, India suffered another blow as Wanindu Hasaranga dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal. Attempting a big shot, Jaiswal was caught, ending his promising innings of 40 runs off 21 balls.
