India delivered a commanding performance against Pakistan, sealing a record 61-run victory in the T20 World Cup 2026 at the R Premadasa Stadium. On a sluggish surface that demanded smart strokeplay, India made full use of the conditions after being invited to bat first, posting a competitive 175/7 in 20 overs.

The standout performer was Ishan Kishan, whose 77 off 40 balls shifted the momentum firmly in India’s favour. His innings, decorated with 10 boundaries and three sixes, came at a time when early pressure was building following Abhishek Sharma’s first-over dismissal. Kishan assessed the pitch quickly, mixing controlled aggression with calculated risk to ensure India finished strongly at the break.
India’s dominance became even more evident during Pakistan’s chase. Early breakthroughs from Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah dismantled the top order, preventing any meaningful partnership from developing. Axar Patel and Varun Chakravarthy maintained relentless pressure through the middle overs, ensuring the required rate spiralled beyond control. Pakistan were eventually bowled out for 114 in 18 overs, with Usman Khan’s 44 being the lone resistance.

At one stage, with the result virtually sealed, captain Suryakumar Yadav handed the ball to part-time options Tilak Varma and Rinku Singh, underlining India’s control over proceedings. Former India cricketer Atul Wassan reacted strongly to the move.
