Australia have received a significant boost ahead of the third Ashes Test in Adelaide, with captain Pat Cummins set to return after being named in the 15-man squad announced on Wednesday. The selectors have made just one change from the Brisbane squad that delivered an eight-wicket win, giving Australia a commanding 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

Cummins, 32, has been sidelined since July after suffering a lower-back injury during the West Indies tour. His comeback has been eagerly awaited, and coach Andrew McDonald confirmed that the skipper has progressed faster than expected.
“We feel he’ll be as best prepared as can be,” Andrew McDonald said. “He was well ahead of where we originally thought he’d be, which sparked genuine discussion about playing him in Brisbane. Seeing him so advanced gives us confidence that he’ll be ready for Adelaide. The net simulations have sharpened his skills, his body feels right, and barring any setbacks, I expect him to be out there tossing the coin.”

Veteran opener Usman Khawaja, who missed the second Test due to a back issue, has also retained his place in the squad. His availability will be closely monitored as Australia aim to maintain their dominance at the Adelaide Oval from December 17.

Meanwhile, Nathan Lyon is expected to return after being left out of the day-night Test at the Gabba, where Australia went with an all-pace attack. The off-spinner’s experience and control could prove crucial on what is traditionally a more balanced surface in Adelaide.

With the series firmly in Australia’s favour, the third Test serves as a pivotal moment for England to attempt a comeback. After Adelaide, the action shifts to Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test before the series finale begins in Sydney on January 4.
