In the second ODI of the three-match ODI series between the hosts Australia and the visitors India at Adelaide Oval (Adelaide), Australia managed a very challenging total of 298/9 at the end of first 50 overs. Shaun Marsh’s brilliant seventh ODI century helped the host side to put a challenging total.
Leading the series by 1-0, Australia decided to bat first in the second ODI after winning the toss. After losing both the openers Alex Carey (18) and the skipper Aaron Finch (6) once again very early, Usman Khawaja and Shaun Marsh controlled the innings with a 56-run partnership for the third wicket.
After Khawaja was run out on 21 off 23 balls, Marsh had another two back-to-back 50+ partnership with Peter Handscomb (20 runs) and Marcus Stoinis (29 runs). In between these times, Marsh completed his half-century in 62 balls and he was continuing his great innings.
The sixth wicket partnership between Marsh and Glenn Maxwell has proved vital in that innings as it put 94-run partnership. After completing his century in 108 balls, Marsh carried his knock for the longer. Meanwhile, Maxwell’s big hitting abilities helped Australia to add quick runs in the death overs.
In the 48th over, Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed both the set batsmen Marsh (131 runs off 123 balls) & Maxwell (48 runs off 37 balls) and it widely helped the visiting side to restrict the hosts under 300 total.
While the lower-order wickets were falling cheaply at the end, Nathan Lyon’s (12*) sixer on the last ball helped Australia to manage 298/9 at the end of 50 overs.
Among the Indian bowlers, pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar (4/45) and Mohammed Shami (3/58) picked up four and three wickets respectively. Also, the left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (1/49) claimed one wicket in that innings.
Some key stats of the innings:
- Australian batsman Shaun Marsh scored 131 runs. The second highest ODI innings by an Australian batsman against India in Australia. The record is 149 runs by Steven Smith at Perth on 12 January 2016.
- Indian right-handed pacer Mohammed Siraj made his ODI debut in this game and finished with the bowling figure of 10-0-76-0. Second most expensive bowling figure by an ODI debutant Indian bowler. The record is 11-6-83-0 by Karsan Ghavri against England at Lord’s on June 7, 1975.
- Australia scored 298/9 in 50 overs. The second highest ODI total for Australia against India at Adelaide Oval (Adelaide). The record is 329/5 on 26 January 2000. Scoring 290+ in an innings at the home venues, Australia has lost only twice and but never in Adelaide Oval.

Nothing in the track to suggest these can't be made. Wickets in hand key as we have seen. I have Australia only marginally ahead

Excellent start for India. Both Bhuvi and Shami have been tight and have been rewarded with wickets. Key pair for Australia now. #INDvAUS

Great innings by Shaun Marsh in extreme conditions. In hot conditions it is even tougher on the batsmen with all the gear on than the bowlers and fielding team.

Though India pulled it back in the end, I still think they let Australia get 30-40 extra runs. Dicey chase. I would bet on Australia winning this one!#INDvAUS #AUSvsIND

How magically Indian bowlers stopped Aussies under 300 mark. I was expecting 330 here.#AUSvsIND
