Pakistan’s tour of Sri Lanka and UAE in 2002 saw one of their worst performance in a test match. Facing Australia in the sub-continent, Pakistan’s prospects certainly looked better before the series had started. However, what happened was far beyond imagination.

Having lost the first Test at Colombo by 41 runs, Waqar Younis, the then Pakistani captain, won the toss and elected to bat in the following test at Sharjah. In what was the story of the whole match, Pakistan’s batting never really got going. They were bundled out on 59 in 31.5 overs. Abdul Razzaq (21), who came in to bat at No. 3 was the only batsman to reach the double figures.

With bowling figures of 11-4-11-4, Shane Warne was the pick of the bowlers for Australia. The trio of pacers in Glenn McGrath, Andy Bichel and Brett Lee had all picked up a couple of wickets each. Led by Matthew Hayden’s ninth Test hundred, 119 (255), with the help of nine fours and a six, Australia scored 310-10 in 92.1 overs. Saqlain Mushtaq (34-2-83-4) was the highest wicket-taker for Australia.

Pakistan didn’t even last till stumps on Day 2 as this time round they were dismantled on 53 in 24.5 overs. With bowling figures of 6.5-2-13-4, Warne emerged as Australia’s pick of the bowler once again.
