Australia has commenced their 2020-21 summer with a dominating win over India in the 1st ODI of the three-match series in Sydney. They batted superbly from the word go and the centuries from Aaron Finch and Steve Smith did the rest as in the second innings, the bowlers did a perfect job despite Hardik Pandya and Shikhar Dhawan threatening for a while. They have now taken a 1-0 lead in the series and India will be raring to make an astounding comeback.
Earlier, Australia decided to bat first after winning the toss, and then, Finch and David Warner tapped and ran a lot of singles which India didn’t expect. They played the new ball bowlers and took on Navdeep Saini, the least experienced from India’s bowling attack. Both the batsmen got to their respective half-centuries with Warner was the front-runner. On the other hand, Finch played his usual ODI knock taking his time and churning out boundaries, but the visitors drew the first blood in 28th over via a DRS.

Mohammed Shami dismissed Warner on 69 and then Smith came out all guns blazing. The latter ripped apart the Indian bowling attack as he and Finch added 108 runs in just around 12 overs. Meanwhile, Finch also completed his 17th ODI hundred before getting out. Marcus Stoinis then was dismissed on a golden duck, but, Glenn Maxwell and Smith had other plans as they toyed with the visitors like anything.
Maxwell looked in great touch for Australia and dished out some amazing strokes. He thrashed 45 off 19 balls with five fours and three sixes while Smith reached his well-deserved hundred off just 62 balls to power the hosts to a mammoth total of 374/6 after 50 overs. India bowled well in the last 3-4 overs as Shami bowled with the figures of 3/59.
India got off to a blistering start thanks to their openers Dhawan and Mayank Agarwal as the team crossed the 50-run mark in the fifth over itself. Agarwal eventually perished off Josh Hazlewood after which Virat Kohli came out to stun the viewers with some crisp strokes with his nonchalance. But Hazlewood got the better of him as well and Shreyas Iyer was once again exposed off the short ball.

KL Rahul also got out early as India was reeling at 101/4 in the 14th over. At the other end, Dhawan joined was joined by Hardik Pandya and the duo played some matured cricket. Hardik took on Adam Zampa superbly forcing him out of the attack. Both of them got to their half-centuries as they added 128 runs for the 5th wicket to keep India in the hunt. But Zampa came back into the attack nip out Dhawan (74 off 86) and once again, India fell back in the chase.
With the wicket falling, Hardik Pandya eventually perished after scoring 90 off 76 balls, once he was dismissed, India didn’t even try to get to the target as both the teams just went through the motions. India could reach only 308 runs in their 50 overs as they lost to Australia by 66 runs to concede an early lead in the series.

Pandya came in to bat when all seemed lost….but he managed to keep the hopes alive while he was there. With some high-quality skills. Major positive from an otherwise insipid game for India. #AusvInd

Hardik Pandya will play many more and better innings like this. Today, he showed that he is not just the IPL rescue act specialist. #AUSvIND #AUSvsIND

Starc has done well to pull back his economy rate to not much more than 7 after the first two or three overs.

6th consecutive loss for India in international cricket (4 ODIs and 2 Tests). Last time they lost 6 completed international matches in a row was on tour of England in 2011. #AusvInd

Gentle reminder that the IPL, as good as it is, is a completely different ballgame to international cricket. Bumrah Shami Chahal Saini Stoinis all coming off great IPLs, Finch Smith Maxwell aren’t. Tables turn in one innings! #AUSvIND
