Match No. 5 of the Indian Premier League 2026 is underway at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, where Lucknow Super Giants locked horns with the Delhi Capitals in a high-stakes early-season clash. DC skipper Axar Patel won the toss and opted to field first, a decision that paid immediate dividends as his bowlers kept things tight in the powerplay.

Delhi handed debuts to key players, including David Miller, Nitish Rana, Lungi Ngidi and Pathum Nissanka, adding fresh energy to their lineup. The early momentum, however, came from their captain, who delivered a crucial breakthrough by dismissing Aiden Markram.

The dismissal came in the sixth over when Axar cleverly altered his pace and length. Bowling a quicker delivery angled in from off-stump, he cramped Markram for room. Attempting an ambitious cut shot, Markram misjudged the line and was bowled, with the ball crashing into the stumps. It was a key moment, as LSG slipped to 48/2, handing DC firm control of the powerplay.

Interestingly, Markram’s role in the batting order has been tweaked this season. After opening alongside Mitchell Marsh last year with considerable success, the South African has been pushed down to No. 3 to accommodate captain Rishabh Pant at the top. The move, while bold, hasn’t delivered immediate returns. Markram, despite his excellent form in international cricket, has often struggled to replicate the same impact in the middle order in the IPL.

Pant himself looked promising during his brief stay but suffered an unfortunate run-out after scoring 7, continuing a mixed run of form in the format. Given his hefty ₹27 crore price tag, expectations remain sky-high, and every innings is under scrutiny.

The reshuffle has disrupted what was once a productive opening combination between Markram and Marsh, who had stitched together consistent partnerships last season. Their understanding at the top played a major role in LSG’s strong starts, and the current experiment raises questions about balance.

At 96/5 after 12 overs, LSG found themselves in trouble, needing a stabilising partnership. With conditions offering some assistance to bowlers, the onus now falls on the lower middle order to rebuild. The likes of Abdul Samad and Mukul Choudhary will need to step up if LSG are to post a competitive total and stay in the contest.
