Axar Patel walked into Delhi Capitals’ pre-IPL 2026 press conference with a smile and a statement that summed up his leadership philosophy perfectly: “You don’t cut vegetables with a sword.” It was a light moment, but it reflected the clarity and practicality he brings as captain—something the franchise will rely on as they chase their first-ever IPL title.

Axar’s first stint as captain had its ups and downs. Delhi Capitals began strongly, winning four consecutive matches, but a sharp dip in form saw them win just two of their next ten games, eventually missing out on the playoffs. His personal form also took a hit during that phase. Still, the team management has shown faith in him, believing one inconsistent season does not define his leadership potential.

Head coach Hemang Badani backed his skipper, stating, “Axar understands the environment and what it takes to lead in a tournament like this. We saw some very strong phases last season… Continuity in leadership gives us a chance to build with more clarity.”

For Axar, captaincy has been a journey of evolution. “I feel that as a player, you focus on what the team requires from you,” he said. “But once you step into a leadership role, your perspective changes. You start thinking beyond yourself – how to get the best out of others.”

He admitted that earlier his focus was largely on his own game, but now he is more involved in tactical decisions.

“Whether it’s field placements, understanding what each player is doing, or how to use them effectively… I’m more involved now,” he added. Importantly, Axar believes in leading from the front. “In tough situations, I prefer taking responsibility first so that things become easier for others,” he explained.

One of the biggest challenges in franchise cricket is managing a diverse squad with players from different countries and roles. Axar is well aware of this dynamic.

“In franchise cricket, players from different countries come together, so it becomes more challenging,” he said. He emphasised adaptability as a key trait. “We can’t play one fixed style of cricket. Conditions change… so we need to be flexible,” he noted. Axar also spoke about balancing data and instinct in decision-making.

“Sometimes what the data says and what is happening in front of you can be different,” he explained. “So I look at the situation first… You won’t use a sword to cut vegetables, right?” Despite Delhi Capitals’ history of frequent captaincy changes, Axar is focused only on the present. “As a team, we don’t sit and talk about what has happened before… it’s about improving from here,” he said.

On handling personal form alongside leadership pressure, he remained honest.

“It does affect you personally because you’re human,” he admitted. “But as a leader, you can’t let that frustration take over.” Known as a reliable all-rounder, Axar embraces his role as the team’s “crisis man.” “I’ve always seen myself as someone who does what the team requires,” he said.

With a calm mindset, tactical clarity, and a team-first approach, Axar Patel heads into IPL 2026 determined to lead Delhi Capitals into a new era.
