Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel has been fined INR 12 lakh after his side maintained a slow over-rate during their IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala on Monday, May 11. The penalty came despite Delhi Capitals registering a thrilling three-wicket victory in a high-scoring encounter at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium.

The IPL confirmed the development through an official statement following Match No. 55 of IPL 2026. According to the league, this was Delhi Capitals’ first over-rate offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate violations. While the fine will come as a setback for Axar Patel, the Delhi skipper would take greater satisfaction from his side’s much-needed victory that kept their slim playoff hopes alive.

Chasing a daunting target of 211 runs, the Delhi Capitals found themselves under immense pressure after losing early wickets. KL Rahul, Abishek Porel and other top-order batters failed to provide stability as Punjab Kings dominated the powerplay.

However, Axar Patel led from the front with a captain’s knock under pressure. The left-handed all-rounder smashed a brilliant 56 off just 30 balls, combining composure with aggressive strokeplay to revive Delhi’s chase. Experienced finisher David Miller then produced a game-changing innings, hammering 51 runs from only 28 deliveries. His attacking approach shifted momentum towards Delhi Capitals during the middle overs.

Impact substitute Ashutosh Sharma and youngster Madhav Tiwari also played valuable cameos as Delhi successfully chased down the target in just 19 overs, finishing on 216/7.

Earlier, Punjab Kings posted a commanding 210/5 after impressive contributions from Priyansh Arya, Cooper Connolly and captain Shreyas Iyer, who remained unbeaten on 59.
