Delhi captain Ayush Badoni delivered a remarkable performance in the Ranji Trophy on Tuesday, scoring an unbeaten double century against Jharkhand. With this achievement, the talented batter joined Indian cricket stalwarts Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir on an elite list of players who have registered double centuries in consecutive first-class innings. Badoni continued his impressive run of form after scoring 217 against Gujarat earlier this month. He remained unbeaten on 210 off 228 deliveries as Delhi declared their first innings at 515, putting themselves in a strong position against Jharkhand.

The Delhi skipper shared an outstanding 334-run partnership with Sumit Mathur, who was unbeaten on 150 off 253 balls when the innings was declared. Their partnership proved crucial after Delhi had slipped to 181/5, leaving the side under pressure earlier in the innings.

Resuming Day 2 at 309/5, Badoni and Mathur continued to frustrate the Jharkhand bowlers, gradually taking control before accelerating the scoring. Their efforts helped Delhi build a commanding total and strengthened their position in the contest. In reply, Jharkhand reached 131/4 at stumps on Day 2, with Utkarsh Singh unbeaten on 53. Delhi will look to capitalise on their first-innings advantage as the match progresses.

Badoni’s latest achievement also places him among a select group of Indian batters. He has become the 21st Indian cricketer to score double centuries in successive first-class innings, joining the likes of Kohli and Gambhir. The Delhi batter has also maintained an impressive first-class average of more than 60, highlighting his growing consistency in the longer format.

Snehal Kauthankar was the most recent player to achieve the feat during the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season. The Goa batter made history by scoring consecutive double centuries before going on to register a triple century in first-class cricket.

Former cricketer Priyank Panchal praised Badoni’s performance and the emergence of technically sound middle-order batters in domestic cricket. “Ayush Badoni with a 210 against Jharkhand. I’m glad that quality middle-order batters, who tackle spin and pace equally well, are emerging from the ranks in Ranji cricket lately,” Panchal wrote on X.

Badoni’s back-to-back double centuries underline his growing importance in Delhi’s batting line-up and strengthen his credentials as one of India’s promising performers in domestic first-class cricket.
