In what was a freak dismissal, Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Azam Khan faced an unfortunate incident while playing for Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League 2024. It happened on Wednesday, August 30 at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua, while the Warriors were chasing a target of 169 runs against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons.
Tenth over, Azam Khan came to the crease, looking to make useful contributions towards his team’s chase. Unfortunately, a short-pitched delivery by pacer Shamar Springer found its target in the 12th over as Khan misjudged the length in pulling the ball. It hit him on the shoulder, rebounded onto his neck, and he lost his balance.

Trying hard to avoid falling on the stumps, Khan accidentally knocked the bails with his bat and got dismissed in one of the weirdest and most unfortunate manners. It was a serious effect from the bouncer as Azam Khan clutched his neck in visible pain, lying on the ground.

The team’s physio immediately rushed onto the field to provide medical assistance. After a quick check-up, Khan was escorted off the field, who had managed just nine runs from as many balls before the incident cut his innings short. This has been the form of Azam that has been coming under the scanner, all the more so after the dismal show in the recently held T20 World Cup 2024 where he could manage just 88 runs in 13 innings at a low average of 8.80.

In the CPL too, his form has been an extension of the same as he scored just nine runs in one match so far. Still, the disappointment from Khan, Guyana Amazon Warriors won a thriller with crucial cameos from Romario Shepherd and Dwaine Pretorius to chase the target in the final ball of the game and seal a three-wicket win.
