Babar Azam’s difficult run with the bat in England continued during the third Test against England at Edgbaston, as the Pakistan captain once again fell for a single-digit score. Babar managed only seven runs from 18 deliveries before England pacer Josh Tongue produced a superb delivery to beat his defence and knock over the off stump. Babar’s dismissal came in the 15th over of Pakistan’s innings, leaving the visitors in serious trouble at 48/5.

The Pakistan captain had already endured a disappointing second Test at Lord’s, where he scored eight and six during a heavy defeat. His latest failure means Babar has now managed just 21 runs across his first three innings of the series. The Pakistan batter arrived at the crease with his team already under significant pressure after England’s bowlers struck early in Birmingham. Pakistan needed Babar to provide some stability and help rebuild the innings, but the experienced batter was unable to withstand the pressure.

Babar faced 18 balls and struck just one boundary before Josh Tongue ended his stay at the crease. The England fast bowler found an ideal length at around 88 mph (141 kph), with the ball moving sharply off the seam after pitching.

Babar remained rooted to his crease instead of moving forward to the delivery. The late movement created a gap between bat and ball, allowing the delivery to sneak underneath his bat and crash into the top of off stump. It was another technically convincing dismissal that highlighted Babar’s struggles during the Test series.

His latest failure has added to a difficult run of scores against England. Babar made eight in the first innings and six in the second at Lord’s before scoring only seven in the first innings of the Edgbaston Test. Across his first three innings, he has now accumulated just 21 runs. The timing of Babar’s dismissal made the situation even more difficult for Pakistan. The visitors were reduced to 48/5 after only 15 overs, leaving England firmly in control of the early stages of the Test.

Babar had also faced questions about Pakistan’s turbulent week before the third Test, following several changes to the squad and coaching setup. However, the captain insisted that the developments were not difficult to handle and viewed the changes as an opportunity for younger players.

“Not difficult. Yes, after that we had a couple of changes, but I think a good opportunity to new boys, and yes we are trying to do our best in this match.” Babar also stressed that Pakistan had attempted to block out the noise surrounding the team and concentrate on their preparations for the Birmingham Test.

“Look, outside noise is not under (our) control. We are just trying to prepare for this match and just think and look after ourselves in the group, and we just talk about, we are not thinking (about) outside noises. We are just trying to do our best in this match.”
The Pakistan captain also welcomed Mike Hesson’s arrival in the coaching setup, praising the former New Zealand coach’s experience and knowledge.

“Yes, (it) help a lot. He is an experienced coach, he has a lot of knowledge, so yes we have him as the white-ball coach also. So yes we have a good communication.” After two low scores at Lord’s, Babar had backed himself to make a strong comeback at Edgbaston. Instead, another failure has increased the scrutiny surrounding his batting form. With Pakistan already under pressure in the Test series, Babar will now be eager to rediscover his rhythm and provide a significant contribution in the innings ahead.
