Captain Babar Azam, known for his ability to foster a light-hearted and inclusive team environment, has a knack for giving his teammates affectionate nicknames. Recently, he bestowed the nickname “Genda” (Hippo) on Azam Khan during a practice drill.

The camaraderie and bonds among players in a sports team are often profound and personal, transcending what outsiders might perceive. This deep connection was evident when Azam Khan struggled with a practice drill, prompting Babar to call him “Genda” in a playful manner.

This gesture not only lightened the mood but also highlighted the brotherly rapport within the team, reflecting a culture of support and unity that goes beyond formal conduct. Babar Azam, having been a part of the team for several years, frequently uses nicknames to maintain a jovial atmosphere.

For instance, he has previously called Saim Ayub “Chota Don” and the team affectionately refers to Iftikhar Ahmed as “Chacha.” These nicknames are a testament to the strong interpersonal relationships within the squad. Addressing rumours of discord, especially between him and star pacer Shaheen Afridi, Babar emphasized the strength and unity of their bond.

“Whenever such things come to my attention, they always seem to come from your [Media] side. Maybe you guys know more than us, but Alhamdulillah, there’s nothing like that. I’m here to clarify it for you and the fans. Our bond is not new; it’s a very old bond. Whatever the situation, we try to stay together and support each other. The whole team has one aim, and that is to serve Pakistan,” Babar Azam stated ahead of the 2023 World Cup.

He further elaborated, “Today I’m sitting here, tomorrow someone else will be here, but the aim remains the same which is to glorify the name of Pakistan and to win matches for Pakistan. Our focus is on these things rather than on individuals or what is happening around us or what might happen in the future. Alhamdulillah, such negative thoughts are far from this team, and everything is quite positive.”

This spirit of unity and focus on collective goals over individual concerns underscores the strength of the Pakistani team as they embark on their World Cup journey, ready to showcase their talent and bring glory to their nation.
