The Test debut cap of the legendary Australian cricketer, Don Bradman has been sold for A$450,000 (₹2.51 crores) after it failed to sell at auction last week. Bradman got his “baggy green” when he played his first Test for Australia in the 1928-29 Ashes series against England in Brisbane. This is the second-highest price paid for a piece of cricket memorabilia after Shane Warne sold his prized baggy green for more than A$1 million to support the bushfire relief efforts.

Bradman’s cap was bought by an Australian businessman named Peter Freedman who has said that he will be touring across the country with it. Freedman, the founder of Rode Microphones, earlier this year paid 9 million Australian dollars ($6.8 million) at an auction for a guitar used by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.

Talking about the same, Freedman said, “Sir Don Bradman is an Aussie legend. I have some exciting plans for the baggy green that will see it travel the country and shared with sports fans and cricketing communities. All too often, memorabilia such as this ends up spending its life on the wall of some boardroom or in some basement bar of a well-heeled sports fanatic. I want as many people to enjoy it as possible.”

Auctioneers had hoped to reach between A$1 million-$2 million for the cap, but it failed to reach its reserve price of A$400,000 in the online auction. The sale still surpasses the A$425,000 paid for Bradman’s baggy green cap from his final tour of England in 1948 that was sold in 2003.
